spring covers, nebulizers, air purifiers. Encase pillows in a zippered
allergen-impermeable covers. Encase mattress and box spring in zippered
allergen-impermeable covers. An allergen-impermeable cover acts as a barrier
between the source of the allergens within the bedding and the allergy sufferer.
Allergen-impermeable barriers zipper around (or encase) your pillow, mattress,
comforter, or box spring. Bed linens (sheets and pillowcases) are then placed
over the allergen barriers. Bedding that is not encased in a zippered,
allergen-impermeable barrier must be washed in hot water every week to remove
allergen particles. Be sure the bedding can withstand the rigors of these
frequent hot water washings. As an alternative to washing, pillows, comforters,
body pillows, and mattress cushions may be encased in allergen-impermeable
covers. The encasings need to be washed only once or twice a year according to
the washing instructions. Even in the cleanest of homes, microscopic dust mites
live in pillows, mattresses, box springs, blankets, carpets, and upholstered
furniture, producing waste particles called allergens to which allergic
individuals react.
